The real reason several WWE King & Queen of the Ring matches were untelevised has now been revealed.
On last night’s WWE Raw (May 13) we saw four quarter final matches take place in both the King & Queen of the Ring tournaments.
Interestingly however, of the four bouts that took place on Raw, two of the eight competitors advanced to that quarter final stage via untelevised matches at a live event in Macon, GA on Sunday night (May 12) – that being Kofi Kingston and Shayna Baszler.
This was also the case on the SmackDown end of the bracket, with LA Knight and Tiffany Stratton both advancing during a live event from Chattanooga, TN (May 11).
Although fans may have seen footage of the untelevised bouts shared online, many have questioned why WWE took this approach to the tournament. Thankfully, courtesy of a new report from Fightful Select we may have our answer.
According to Fightful, WWE staged four of the first round King and Queen of the Ring bouts away from WWE cameras for two reasons: to avoid an “overkill” of tournament matches on TV and secondly to help draw fans to the live events the matches featured on.
The King of the Ring tournament continues on this Friday’s SmackDown (May 17) as Randy Orton takes on Carmelo Hayes and LA Knight faces The Bloodline’s Tama Tonga.
The Queen of the Ring will also stage two quarter final bouts as Jade Cargill faces Nia Jax and Bianca Belair takes on Tiffany Stratton.
