A new update has shed light on Kenny Omega’s illness and it’s affect on AEW’s upcoming creative plans.

On Friday, December 14 Omega announced on Twitter that he would be out of action ‘indefinitely’ posting a picture of himself in a hospital bed.
While not specified by Omega in the post, the reason for his absence was later revealed by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio to be a “serious” illness; that being Diverticulitis.
Diverticulitis is inflammation caused by pouches or bulges called diverticula forming in the walls of the large intestine/colon. Common symptoms include severe abdominal pain, nausea, and high temperatures.
Now, in a new update Fightful Select have added further details to Omega’s diagnosis, revealing when the former AEW World Champion began to feel unwell, as well as how AEW’s plans for him were affected as a result.

According to the report Omega felt unwell before his match with Ethan Page on the December 9 edition of AEW Collision, however, he would reportedly keep this “close to the vest” and compete in the match anyway.
Then, he would then also appear at AEW Dynamite on December 13, and despite initially believing he would only be attending the show in a backstage capacity, he would end up in a live promo segment alongside Chris Jericho, Ricky Starks and Big Bill.
Several of those backstage at Dynamite told Fightful that they could tell Omega wasn’t feeling at his best, however, he decided to press on and continue working.

The next day, Omega reportedly sought medical attention where he was hospitalised on doctor’s orders, leading to his post where he announced his indefinite hiatus.
While there is currently no timetable on a return for Omega, the report notes that he has been removed from AEW’s immediate plans.
These plans would have of course, not only seen him compete alongside Jericho at AEW World’s End; where they are set to challenge Starks and Bill for the AEW Tag Team Championships, but also potentially a match on this week’s Dynamite also (December 20).

These plans, according to the report, were only “tentative” with no specific opponent mentioned.
Wrestling/MMA fans may remember that Brock Lesnar struggled with diverticulitis while with the UFC, with The Beast notably referencing his diverticulitis when retiring from MMA in 2011, ahead of his WWE return.
We will continue to provide updates on Omega’s status as they become available, and continue to wish Omega a safe, full and complete recovery.
