With the former Edge’s WWE contract expiring in September 2023, Adam Copeland made his AEW debut on October 1 of that year.

Arriving in AEW with his WWE theme by Alter Bridge, Copeland was reunited with Christian Cage only to shake hands with Darby Allin and Sting as the show went off air.

On an appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Copeland revealed details of how the deal came about, saying:
“It happened so quick. My contract with WWE was up on, I want to say September 21st. That’s when I started talking to Tony [Khan.] It was September 22nd. And WrestleDream was October 1st. So it all happened within a week.”

The conversation would turn to why he chose to leave WWE when he did instead of signing a new deal, with Edge stating:
“It felt like I’d done everything that I was going to do with WWE. I’d worked [with] the people I wanted to work, 95 percent anyway.
“And it really just felt that they were on a direction and I was on a direction and they were kind of going separate ways.”

In the interview, Copeland would say that he left WWE on good terms.
He is the current AEW TNT Champion and uses the Cope Open as a “vehicle for some young guys to get some different experience.”
Edge was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2012 and is a Grand Slam Champion.
