The reason for some seemingly rushed championship plans surrounding AEW star Mercedes Mone has potentially been revealed.

AEW TBS Champion Willow Nightingale will put the belt on the line at STARDOM Flashing Champions on Saturday, May 18.
At the STARDOM show, Nightingale will face Tam Nakano after signing a contract on AEW Dynamite to face Mercedes Mone at Double or Nothing on May 26, 2024.

Addressing the reason why Takano vs Nightingale had to happen this weekend on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed:
“The match had been talked about and STARDOM didn’t want the match this soon. They wanted to promote it longer.
“And basically Tony Khan told them, or AEW, I don’t know if it was Tony directly – AEW told them ‘you gotta do it this week, it’s got to be this week.”

With AEW Double or Nothing taking place just over a week after the STARDOM show, this potentially implies that Nightingale could be dropping the belt to Mone at the pay-per-view.
On the May 15 episode of AEW Dynamite, Mone and Nightingale signed the contract for their upcoming PPV match.
The contract signing saw Mone slap Nightingale who subsequently put her opponent through a table.
Nightingale became TBS Champion on April 21, 2024, defeating Julia Hart at AEW Dynasty.
