WWE have apparently come up with a plan to challenge desirable stars from becoming free agents when their contracts are up
Competition from AEW has seen some former big names leave WWE to sign contracts with Tony Khan.
AEW has racked up quite a roster of former WWE names, including most recently Adam Copeland who had spent the majority of his wrestling career in WWE.
It was recently reported that Rey Mysterio had signed a new contract with WWE, with it having been reported that Dominik Mysterio has recently done the same.
While discussing the re-signings on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer provided insight into WWE’s current thinking, saying:
“I was told they (WWE) were looking at long term deals with greatly increased compensation for the guys because they don’t want free agents right now.”
While this could be an incentive to keep their own talent under WWE contract, AEW has secured some wins with free agents that have not been under a past deal.
Will Ospreay reportedly had interest from both WWE and AEW before choosing to sign with Tony Khan.
Jade Cargill recently joined WWE following her time in AEW, saying that “the route (she) wanted to take was different” and “the only way (she) could do it was coming to the WWE Universe.”
Following AEW Full Gear, Ospreay revealed that signing with AEW would allow him to remain in the United Kingdom, noting the benefit it would have on his family.
